M74 (also called NGC 628) is a well-known spiral galaxy in the constellation Pisces. Discovered in 1780 by P. Mechain, M74 was listed in the Messier catalogue as a nonstellar object. And it is, in fact, not very bright; a casual observer, armed with only an optical tele- scope, might not even notice it. Yet when M74 is observed with a powerful telescope, it displays its beauty. In false color, the galaxy is even more magnificent: its spiral arms (with a diameter of 80,000 light years) and bright core are easy to see.
M74 appears round because we are viewing it face on. Most galaxies are viewed at an oblique angle and look ovular or elongated.
